AU | Previous Game Backstory:
This version of King DeDeDe is from a fan work called There Will Be Brawl, a dystopian film noir style reimagining of the Super Smash Bros. Brawl game universe. After consulting with the mods, There Will Be Brawl was determined to count as an AU for purposes of the Destiny Strings application process. Since TWBB has its own wiki, DeDeDe's complete history as part of the AU can be found on this page. The history of the setting itself is over here.

AU | Previous Game Differences (List form):
-The TWBB universe is much more modern than the one from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, though it is still a 'combined' Nintendo universe. The story takes place in the Mushroom Kingdom, and the setting is shown to be that of a bustling metropolis in which the main cast lives.
-The universe as a whole is very dark, depressing, and violent. Many of the characters from the game point are living desperately at this point, and have turned to crime, drugs, and the sex trade as ways of making money. The ones who aren't directly involved in those things are at least tangentially involved, as the Kingdom itself is on the verge of crumbling.
-The most significant difference as far as DeDeDe is personally concerned is that Kirby is not the happy-go-lucky cheerful hero of Dream Land that he is depicted as in the games, but rather a cannibalistic serial killer who devours his victims and dances in their skin for his own amusement.
-DeDeDe's status as of his canon point, rather than ruler of Dream Land, is that of one of the four mafia dons that arose in the Mushroom Kingdom after Kirby's defeat and subsequent imprisonment. Dream Land was the first to fall during Kirby's original killing spree, and DeDeDe was unable to save it.

Canon Standing: Coming in immediately post-death. DeDeDe was psychically murdered in a way that left his innards quite separate from the rest of his mutilated body, so he is going to need a complete replacement body.

Personality:
DeDeDe, by his own words, appears to be 'a fat, sloppy hedonist - a dopey pushover that's too big for his parka.' Most of this is true. Fat, sloppy, hedonistic, and too big for his parka... yes. But he is in no way dopey or a pushover. These are part of the image he tends to project to get his rivals to think he's less dangerous than he actually is, since it's a good way to keep them off his back from day to day. The truth is, DeDeDe is far more shrewd than he lets on, and what seems like senseless hedonism is actually part of an effort to gain and consolidate personal power to keep himself safe from the machinations of the other mafia dons, and also to win the hearts of the people living in the slums. Even in the sad state he's in now, he is a leader, and has the charisma to get people to follow and support him.

Of course, that's not to say that he's not also greedy, perverted, and lazy, as he definitely is. But although he's become corrupt and grown fat by taking advantage of the misfortune in the kingdom, he still has an essentially good heart under it all. DeDeDe takes care of his own, especially those who are good to him in return, and he does genuinely care about the welfare of the people. He has become a pacifist after the horrors inflicted by Kirby (excepting his desire to have a second shot at taking the coral cannibal down himself), and is a firm believer in catching more flies with honey than vinegar, frequently stating that diplomacy will always trump brute strength in negotiations. To this end, he is even willing to strike an alliance with Police Chief Link in an effort to protect the people from further bloodshed and to prevent the kingdom from descending into total chaos.

The fact that DeDeDe bothers to carve out a small empire for himself as one of the four dons shows that he is not completely devoid of ambition after the cannibal's rampage, but much like his previous rule in Dream Land, what he is ultimately concerned about is his own comfort. He runs a tight ship, and has very little patience for people slacking off or holding out on him. Even considering this, however, he's easily the most generous of the four dons to the people in his territory, and is keeping a lot of criminals off the streets by giving them a place to stay and earn a (somewhat) honest living. He is widely respected by his employees, his patrons, and even his enemies, as his conversation with Samus proves.

Shreds of DeDeDe's pride do remain as well, as he still calls himself 'King' even though there is nothing left in Dream Land to rule, and being king of the slums is hardly anything worth being terribly proud of. And although he recognizes that he can't fix things on his own, he also refuses to bow Ganondorf or Bowser, believing that his way of doing things will ultimately cause the least amount of harm to the surviving citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom if he is the one to emerge victorious in the ongoing crime war between the three remaining mafia dons. He is generally fair but firm in all of his business dealings, and certainly willing to play a little hardball at the negotiating table to get what he wants.

Key Personality Differences:
Compared to the personality he displays in the original work, TWBB!DeDeDe is essentially a broken shell of his former self. Having failed at defending Dream Land from Kirby and also unable to defeat him at the end of his rampage, he has been forced to acknowledge the dark and depressing state of the world and has adapted accordingly. As the boss of the slums, he has become even fatter and lazier than he was before, giving himself over to the pleasures of the flesh and letting money do the talking. He is also much less eager to start fights than his original universe counterpart, primarily as a result of the horrors he has seen. However, he is a strong negotiator, possessing considerable influence in the underworld and using it to maintain what power he was able to consolidate for himself after Dream Land's fall. Where once there were Waddle Dees and Waddle Doos there are now sex club patrons and loyal business partners, where once there was a castle there is now a nightclub, and where once the penguin king wielded a hammer he now wields sex and cash.

Canon Powers:
Perhaps owing to his generous bulk, DeDeDe is immensely strong, capable of swinging around his jet-powered hammer with a single arm.

Canon Weapons|Items:
The only weapon DeDeDe carries and the only one he really feels he needs is his specially outfitted jet-powered hammer with his star insignia painted on the head. It deals straight Physical damage with no elemental subtypes.

Canon Allies:
None.

Canon Baggage:
Clothing, jet hammer, small stash of drugs and alcohol, and a safe full of gold coins.
